If you are one of the millions of Americans who suffer from osteoarthritis of the hip, you are already familiar with the ways in which this debilitating condition can affect your life. Joint replacement surgery has long been the gold standard treatment to relieve chronic pain and decreased mobility associated with advanced hip arthritis. Now, researchers are gaining a better understanding of how hip replacement can benefit the more intimate aspects of your life.
According to a recent study presented at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, hip replacement surgery can substantially enhance your sex life. Surgeons found that among participants who underwent a total hip replacement, sexual functioning improved by up to 90 percent.
Thanks to advances in medical technology and surgical techniques, the majority of hip replacements can now be performed using a minimally invasive technique. At the Hip Surgery Center of Excellence in Beverly Hills, our world-renowned orthopedic surgeons are trained in the most advanced hip procedures and routinely perform hip replacement surgery with high patient satisfaction.

Details of the Study
The first-of-its-kind study included 174 males and females receiving osteoarthritis-related hip replacement surgery. Participants filled out detailed questionnaires before surgery, six months after surgery, and a full year following the operation. Prior to surgery, 67 percent of respondents reported pain; reduced libido (49 percent); and an inability to attain proper position (14 percent). Moreover, 91 percent felt that their arthritis had a negative impact on their sex life.
Following hip replacement surgery, 81 percent of participants reported an improvement in the frequency of sexual activity. Increases in general well-being (84 percent), sexual self-esteem (55 percent), and libido (42 percent) were also noted. Only 4.7 percent of participants revealed that they were still unable to position themselves correctly.
Interestingly, the improved sexual functioning was reported across all age groups in the study, from individuals in their 20s to those in their 80s. Leaders of the study hope that these results will encourage a more open conversation regarding the option of hip replacement between arthritis sufferers and their surgeons.
Who is Eligible for a Total Hip Replacement?
Most patients who undergo a total hip replacement are between 50 and 80 years of age and are suffering chronic pain due to hip osteoarthritis. Eligibility for surgery requires careful assessment of treatment options and an understanding of the risks, benefits, and recovery process following the procedure. Individuals who experience the following may be candidates for a total hip replacement:
- Hip pain due to osteoarthritis, traumatic arthritis, or congenital joint instability
- Hip pain, stiffness, or limited mobility that limits everyday activities
- Hip pain that cannot be relieved by conservative therapies
Hip replacement surgery can be performed using a minimally invasive technique. If you feel that you may benefit from a hip replacement, the experienced hip surgeons at the Beverly Hills Hip Surgery Center of Excellence can help determine your candidacy.
