Traditional Hip Replacement Surgery

Hip replacement surgery involves replacing the hip joint with a prosthetic implant. The surgery can be performed either as a total replacement or a half replacement. Hip replacement surgery is generally conducted to relieve arthritis pain or repair severe joint damage.

Hip replacement surgery is performed on the hip joint when painful symptoms can no longer be controlled with medication or other non-operative treatments. The hip joint prosthesis consists of ball and socket components that are biocompatible, meaning they are designed to be accepted by the body. Following surgery, hip replacement can relieve pain and restore a full range of motion to the hip joint. Hip replacement is currently one of the most commonly performed orthopedic procedures.

The Surgical Procedure

Prior to hip replacement surgery, the surgeon will place the patient under either general anesthesia or regional anesthesia. The surgeon may also recommend that antibiotics be taken to avoid risk of infection. During the procedure, the surgeon will make an incision into the hip area and remove the damaged parts of the hip joint. They will be replaced with a prosthesis made up of a stem that goes into the femur, the ball and fits into the stem, and a cup that fits into the socket of the hip joint. When the procedure is complete, the incision will be closed with stitches or surgical staples and a sterile dressing will be applied.

Recovery from Hip Replacement Surgery

After hip replacement surgery, the patient will require antibiotics for about a day and medicines to control pain and prevent blood clots will be provided. In general, most patients will be able to get out of bed with help on the day after surgery. Rehabilitation after surgery will depend on the intricacies of the surgery and how much weight the patient is able to put on their leg. A physical therapist will teach the patient how to walk, exercise and do other daily activities while they heal. It may be necessary to use a walker or crutches for several weeks after surgery. Total rehabilitation will take at least 6 months.
